Homestead Wife Happy Life

Welcome to our little homestead. I’m LaDonna, author and owner of Homestead Wife Happy Life. Nothing makes me happier than spending time in our backyard homestead with my husband, Kendall and our two boys, Ethan and Colton. We have five acres in Central Texas where we care for our chickens, rabbits, and family milk cow. We also have a small garden that we enjoy as well.

How it all started

I grew up on 72 acres, where my family took care of a large garden and about 15 beef cows. In a lot of ways, we lived off the land. We ate whatever we grew in the garden or had canned from the previous year. We filled the freezer with a steer each year. We had fresh eggs from our chickens. We ground our own wheat and made fresh bread every other day. I remember my mom LOVING everything about living there. She loved everything from shredding the field with the old tractor, to calling the cows by shaking the ranch cube bag and calling their names. Unfortunately, I missed my chance to love this lifestyle back then. I didn’t recognize what a unique gift it was to grow up doing these things. All I saw was the hard work and sweat that went into it. So, when I grew up and got married, Kendall and I chose to do things the more “normal” way. We both got jobs and bought our food at the grocery store.

How we transitioned toward homesteading

I actually think Kendall was the one who took the first step. He loves plants and has a real talent for making things grow. He started by planting a small garden in our backyard. After a few years he was inspired by some friends with backyard chickens, and decided to build a chicken coop for a few chicks.

In the evenings after work we would tend the garden and take care of our chickens together. What started as a way for me to spend time with Kendall has bloomed into a full-blown love affair with the homestead lifestyle. After adding to it a little at a time, we now have over 20 chickens, an overflowing garden, several TAMUK rabbits, and one cow, Mable Jean (who brings me a ridiculous amount of happiness.)

Moving forward

God has blessed us by giving me the ability to cut back on my hours at work, so I can spend more time with my boys at the homestead. We are not experts on backyard homesteading, but we have learned a lot over the past few years, and are looking forward to learning more. My goal is to share what has and hasn’t worked for us, so you can hopefully avoid our mistakes and benefit from what we have learned.

If you are just getting started on backyard homesteading, or if you are still in the dreaming stage, I hope to inspire you to take those first steps. It isn’t easy – in fact, it is a lot of hard work, but it is very rewarding and worth every bit of effort. I know that you too will find the homestead life to be a happy one!
